Managing Photography and School

Updated: Jan 16, 2019

Are you a student? Do you struggle to balance what you love with what you know you need to do?

Being a student and getting your education is really hard. You have to balance so much and it's really stressful! You might also have a side job that pays for your photography. Most of your family probably loves that you "do" photography but just don't understand that this is what you want to do for life!

“What's not okay is giving up what you love to satisfy what society says you have to do. ”

My photography is constantly evolving and at this point in my life I hate that a lot of my photography takes second place to homework, my job, family and friends, and so many other excuses. I have to really force time to work on my photography and get better. I totally understand that the stress of making what you love your job, is giving you acne. I totally understand that your photography is choking you because you want to put out more work than you have ideas for. It's okay to take a break. It's okay to do less than what you want. What's not okay is giving up what you love to satisfy what society says you have to do.

Student Life

You have to believe that you will not be a student forever. And you have to believe that it's okay to use some of those precious credits to get better at what you love.

If photography is something you want to do, you have to be willing to put money, time, and energy into it. You may get loans out just to get a good camera (done it). You may say no to a night out in order to get those edits done (done it). You may spend hours installing software, editing photos, taking photos, thinking up ideas, and or convincing your best friend to spend their afternoon modelling for you (done it all)!

It's not easy to admit that you don't have time to not work on what you love. But you don't. Time doesn't stop just because you are a student. So while it's okay to take a break for a little bit, you can't just wait till it's over to get back onto the horse. You could also lose the drive you have for photography and lose what you have worked so hard for. Don't give up just because people tell you that you have to focus on school. Your dreams don't take second place.
